Projects – Heating Mats

I have recently read an I Dig My Garden Forums on creating a seed sprouting heating mat/heating bed using Christmas lights, kitty litter and a plastic bin. I had to give it a try. Last night I had the time, and the equipment needed, and put my heating  bed together. First thing, I checked the lights to make sure they still worked. I then placed them in the bin in a spaced out pattern and taped the wires down at intervals with duct tape.

Taped down with lights on.

I used unscented kitty litter. I poured in two twenty pound bags since I had a very large plastic bin to fill.

I was hoping to only use one bag, but ended up needing two.

Uh-oh! Too much interest from my Maine Coon Cat Rusty. A dilemma that must be solved.

I taped the edges of the lid to the container to keep in heat and keep out curious cats. Inside the box I have a flat of herb seeds sown in seed starter. I am hoping to grow my own herbs indoors since I use them almost daily in my cooking. They are pricey to buy at the grocers at 2.99 a pot. I’m hoping this solution will give me an abundance of seedlings and plants.
