The avocado plant I rooted from a pit has grown steadily throughout the winter months and is now about three feet tall. I am very pleased with the plant. It reminds me a bit of a schefflera, better known as an umbrella tree. I have pinched it off twice as recommended by websites I have researched. I will continue to pinch back as it grows taller and branches out even more. I have repotted it once. The heavy root growth that was beginning to creep out the drainage hole on the bottom of the pot prompted the repotting. I water the plant about once a week. When the avocado was in a smaller clay pot I watered every five days. When March rolls around I will begin to add a bit of fertilizer to the water. I think this plant looks like it would like to have a vacation on the screened-in porch this summer. All in all I am really pleased with my “free” plant.
