My coleus seedlings are now potted up in solo 3 oz plastic cups. They are beginning to show interesting colors and patterns. I like the green edge on the above plant. The culture of coleus is simple, shade to half-sun, with some of the newer varieties able to thrive in full sun too. I grow my coleus from seed. You can find a mini-tutorial on how I keep the seedlings from becoming overcrowded here: Planting coleus seeds. Below are a few of my developing seedlings. I will plant the majority in my garden, a few will have the easy life and stay inside as houseplants. As they grow they will develop brighter and more distinct color swirls, notched edges, rippled and twirly leaves, and a multitude of amazing patterns.

Hi Cyndi, They will probably all live if you can separate them with root intact. Gently “Jiggle” them apart. Coleus will root in water, so water them well when you transplant and that will help them too. You could also place them in a plastic bag to keep water from evaporating from the leaves. Try this for a few days and then take them out so mildew and damping off doesn’t attack them. Good luck. Thanks for reading and posting here. Kathy

My seedlings ARE crowded in groups of 4-5 sprouts. Any hope for them? If so, when should I transplant them to individual cups?? They are currently at 1 – 1.5 inches and have 4 tiny leaves.
